5 Things Your Make-up Artist Wishes You Knew

For many women, getting makeup applied professionally is a big deal. It’s not something they do on a regular basis, and the process can feel a little overwhelming. Questions like “What should I bring? Do I wear foundation?” can come up and quite often you don’t want to ask because you think it might be a ‘silly question’.

Here’s the thing though… Your makeup artist wants to guide you through the process, they want to support you and guide you through your first experience and they want you to love the experience. They want you to feel relaxed, pampered and looked after.

So ask the silly questions if you’ve got some. But hopefully after this article most of your questions will be answered.

I’ve talked with other makeup artists and have had experiences with hundreds of clients and there are 5 things that I wish that all clients knew. These are things that make our job as a makeup artist easier and will make your experience better too.

fresh-face1. Come With a Makeup-Free Face.

To get the best results you should show up to your appointment with a clean face. Best to talk with your makeup artist to find out exactly how they want you to come, but in most cases they will want a blank canvas to work their magic on – And by blank canvas I mean: no foundation, no primer, no mascara. Nothing. Most makeup artists will want to match the foundation to your skin tone and type and use their long lasting professional products.

talk-to-your-makeup-artist2. Speak Up If You Are Unsure About Things.

Your makeup artist wants you to be amazed by the final result. If there is anything that you are unhappy with, let them know. Although how things look mid-way through may not be indicative of the final result, still speak up and let them know your expectations. The last thing that you or your makeup artist wants is you leaving unhappy with the final result. The key is clear communication!

inspiration3. Always Show an Example of What You Want.

No matter if you are thinking about a variety of styles, or have your heart set on a specific look, the best way to get results is to bring an example of what you want. Having a photo or image allows your makeup artist to know exactly what your expectations are. This allows them to have the best chance to meet your expectations. Pintrest and Instagram are great places to find inspiration. One of the most frustrating things is when a client says “Natural makeup” or “Dramatic makeup” and then they are unsure of the final result because it is too much or not enough makeup. Your makeup artists definition of ‘dramatic’ or ‘natural’ may be very different from yours, so best to give them a few images to ensure you are on the same page.

impossible4. Don’t Demand The Impossible

Even with all the amazing things that makeup artists can do with contouring and highlighting, your face is unique and different. You may have a set look in mind, but we can’t change the fact that you look like you. We can make you look incredible, but manage your own expectations that you aren’t going to look exactly like the photo you bring in, especially if you have different eyes, and face structure. Your makeup artist should have an open and honest discussion with you before they begin and discuss your expectations. Be realistic and accepting of what they say, if they say something won’t work out or look good, take their word for it.

face5. Prepare Your Face Weeks Before.

If you are getting your makeup done for a special occasion, ESPECIALLY a wedding, remember to have a good moisturizing routine the week before. If you keep your lips and face moisturised it will make sure that the makeup goes on smooth and even, giving you a more flawless finish. Best to talk with your makeup artist well in advance and they can give you advice on how to best prepare your skin before your makeup application.

I hope that these 5 tips answers any questions you might have and helps you to better communicate your expectations to your makeup artist. If every client did these 5 things it would make everyone’s lives much easier.
